Although I am not as active in blogging as I would like to be, I have learned the benefits of blogging. Writing one’s own thoughts and feelings and even experiences about mental health is a form of therapy. Of course, this doesn’t substitute actual therapy, but writing is very therapeutic.
I recommend anyone to journal and write about how they feel. It is very liberating, especially since it can be hard to talk about our mental health journey.
I have been able to learn at what I am able to freely disclose. Vulnerability is a beautiful thing. It brings forth courage.
Although not everyone has to blog on the internet, it is important to find ways to connect. It is important, though, to do research on any online mental health groups. Look at how the moderators behave. Is the group open yet ensuring safety? How do people treat mental health? I’ve been in groups where people talk down on their therapists. Although I understand that not all therapists are great, it is important to be able to find help. Negative talk towards treatment can prevent from others from seeking help.
In addition, it is important to avoid harmful behavior. Without disclosing what hashtags are used, there have been ways to promote and even support unhealthy behavior, such as promoting eating disorders. Luckily, social media has become more active in taking down harmful posts. But we cannot expect for social media to do all the worth. At the end of the day, we are responsible for what we search for.
But this shouldn’t discourage you from seeking online support. Sites, such as The Mighty, are a great place to get positive support. People are able to connect and not feel alone.
When it comes to mental health issues, we might feel alone. But these online groups can be part of our community.
Thank you,
